Hey everybody. I’m Missceegee and I’ve been stalking posts for a few months looking for tips and ideas for all things chicken.
We had four chickens for a year once before but had difficulty with the setup location we had available on our small property so we found them a new home.
Fast forward a few years and I have plenty of space now. Chickens were always in the plan but not til we rehabbed the coop on the property. Then our adult daughter came home a week after we moved in with 16 chicks she bought for her birthday and we got on the fast track quick! 14 of these have survived.
The chicks were fine in their plastic brood box til all of a sudden they were too big! I built a new one much bigger for them following plans I found on YouTube. It was my first woodworking project ever.
Those original 16 included 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Brown Leghorns, and 14 Rhode Island Reds. Two of the RIR didn’t make it and one turned out to be a rooster. They’re 5 months old and doing well. We just built an awesome mobile tractor for them plus they have a lot of pasture to roam. They’ve become my pets. I love watching those tiny little raptors.
Chicken fever hit and I wanted 4 more, but pullets, not chicks. So a couple days ago we went to a local farm and came home with a few more. SEVEN to be exact. Thanks makes 20 hens and 1 roo total now. So much for four! We got 2 Starlight Green Eggers, 1 Silver Lace Wyandotte, 2 Plymouth Blue Rocks, and two whose breeds aren’t matching my receipt so I’m trying to figure it out. One I think is an Andalusian (the all black Lucy) and I have drawn a blank on the other (black with iridescent green black back and orange chest Pearl). Photos attached for any feedback.
I love watching them. It’s peaceful. I’ve four kids, 2 big dogs, an assortment of fish, and a chunk of land to take care of. I’m a homeschooling mom and after forming and leading a thriving co-op for 11 years, I was ready for a new adventure.
I will be lurking about reading and learning even if I’m unsure how much I will post.
