Hello members
I am 78and 0ld Walter L. Skinner S/Sgt USAFR
Ive been on site many times before logging on. I never knew there was so many breeds of chickens. I like the Astralorps so orderd 31 and one rooster.Lost 2. They have been here for 53 days and are now half grown. I feed them growing mash mainly along with cooked corn meal every morning. a cup a day to be exact. 16 cups in 5 lb. They love it. Also Grass and table scraps. They even was eating a foam paper plate till i got it away from them. Never raised chickens before. only raised 4 children and a little H . Spent 3 yrs aboad ship, USN one year on the farm and 18 years in the AF. Now anchored in or near Wallace WV. The north Wallace. We live in a U hollow .the house i built is at the bottom of the U. It is so quiet one has to wake up to see if he or she died. We ,wife and i love it here. Can't keep up with the grass this year. So much rain.
Wife is Johnnie J (Dupuis) Skinner
I may post some pics sometime when is a guess.
Cheers! Have a nice safe 4th. Be armed and ready at all times.

Hey, you would probably love getting on and just shooting the breeze on the Old Folks Home page. Sometimes, they even talk chickens! lol...it can get crazy, so if you like a fun and sometimes serious conversation, go to this thread.

We have a grandson that just joined the Navy. He wants to be a diver really bad. He is doing well so far, hear that getting into diving is hard, but he has been working out with someone out here in the water to get a bit of the feel for it. We hear it's a really tough training. We say, you can do it! Also have a son-in law that has been in the Navy since he was very young. And, another grandson that is in the National Guard, but, he just signed up to go into active duty..and will be going somewhere in Aug. Can't say where. ;)
Have fun on the site. Lots of different places to go visit.

Walter!

Welcome to BYC, Walter. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry about the loss of your two chickens. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Australorps.

Very nice to meet you Walter. I sincerely appreciate your many years in service. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I too, think you would enjoy "The Old Folks Home," thread. You do not have to be old to belong.

BTW excuse my senior moment - Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Thank you for the welcome and directions to the old folks home. I just now looked at it and may read a bit sometime later.
A lot of miltary in the family too. I have one brother a master sargent in the Air Force. he passed away some time back. HE had 2 sons in the AF both retired now. One visited here the 4th. weekend, with his wife and son. We all had a great time. Notice i was't on here for a while. Been to busy with wife of 85 years, Grandson in hospital . All the rain and no grass getting cut. Snakes are plentyfull around here this year. Due to all the rain, the farmers that require winter hay are having a rough time of getting hay in.
Thank you again! cheers!
