Newbie/Lost all our chickens today MD

Thank you all for your kind words. It has been heartbreaking. The thing that really broke me down was my 73 year old FIL came to my dh and I in tears and said it was all his fault that he let the chickens out at 6:30 am instead of 5:30 a.m. He had been running behind that morning. We tried very hard to tell him it was not his fault. I think each of is keeps thinking if only we had done something different.

It has been so hard on all of us. I keep thinking oh I will take this out to the chickens and then it dawns on me they are gone.

My dh and I have been talking. He wants to move our nests so that we can access them from the outside. He also wants to put a new fan in for ventalation and add feeders and waters inside. We have also talked about him building an automatic door.

Well, we got our report from the lab. The vet I talked to said that it was her impression that something chased the chickens into the coop where they died from stress and or overheated. Now she mentioned there was a vitamin deficiency and that there were liver lesions on the one chicken she had but her opinion was that - that is not what killed the chicken. She said that was either a bacterial infection or possibly Histomoniasis. She is sending samples to the main lab to see if we get more information.

I have been feeding bagged feed from Southern States, giving the chickens scraps (grapes, celery, salad mix, potato peelings, apple peelings etc), grit, cracked corn, and anything else they can catch as I have seen them catching bugs).

Any suggestions on trying to prevent vitamin deficiency?

Also how do you prevent Histomoniasis?
