I just posted regarding an injury; didn't catch the introduce yourself part till after.

Okay, I'm a retired teacher living in the rural inland Pacific Northwest. I'm into my second year with chickens; I started with three hens adopted when a friend moved. Sweetheart is a Barred Rock and Dot and Debbie Harry are mutts for all I know. A few months ago I introduced a grown roo someone had dumped on the side of the road to either be hit by a vehicle or attacked by a predator. I isolated him for a few days first and he's blended quite well though his crow sounds more like a banshee than a rooster.

I brought in two pullets a few weeks ago, kept them in a wire cage dog kennel in the run for a couple of weeks. When I let them out they hung together and everyone else pretty much ignored them (except the roo; he went after them a few times). One night a week ago I put them in the nest box after bedtime and they were fine. The next night I tried putting Lucy (Guinevere had taken off; found her later hiding out) on the roost at bed time, went out the next morning to find her scalp laid open and have been caring for her separately every since. Even Guinevere attacked her when I tried putting her in the isolation cage. I hate it when the kids suffer for adults' lack of knowledge or stupidity. I hate it even more when I'm that adult.

Anyway, here I am and grateful this place exists. Thank you.
