Hello,
My name is Celeste. I am new to this site. I found the website by typing chicken questions in. Most times, this website had the answer I was looking for.
I have been seriously interested in getting chickens since the spring and two weeks ago, I was given four one year old Rhode Island Reds. They are beautiful and I kind of feel like we cheated, because they are already laying.
My children and I are having a blast! We have some land and an old barn. Apparently the barn was already set up for chickens with an old coop still in tact and a bunch of laying boxes. All we needed to add was the feed and pine shavings and a dear friend set us up with that as well. Wouldn't take no for an answer, or any money for that matter.
I am already planning how many more we can add, to have for family and extra for a farm stand.
We live near woods so I am very skittish about free ranging. There was an outside coop attached to the indoor coop which already existed. My husband refurbished it and the chickens go in and out. They seem pretty happy, but they were allowed to free range before so I am beginning to feel guilty. I just don't want to lose them.
Anyway, I am a stay at home homeschooling wife and mother of eight children between the ages of 13 months and 12 years. I enjoy gardening and would also like to expand the garden enough to feed our brood and have enough leftover to sell.
I am also hoping to join a knitting group real soon, something I have always wanted to do, but couldn't find the time.
It has been such a pleasure reading the posts here. I hope I am able to add something useful to the group!
