Hello all!! today I, a thirteen year old from Jersey, have found my true calling, CHICKENS. How, u may ask yourself, did i start liking chickens? Well, one day i was surfing channels, and the news popped on. The reporter was talking about a man fighting to keep his 6 hens. "What, people keep chickens?!?", was my first thought. My curiosity grew, so i did some research, and found that their are over 400 breeds of chickens*MIND BLOW*. Before that, i only thought of chickens as white and brown, thats it. BUT 400? When did this happen? Then i found this site called My Pet Chicken. I checked out their list of chickens, and the first one i click on is the Amerucana. as i read about this breed, the thing that catches my mind is that it lays blue eggs. IT LAYS BLUE EGGS. Thats it, i'm hooked. Next thing i know, I'm joining a site devoted to chickens. I wonder how many chickens will it take to feed my family, and not to forget, my now growing addiction.

. How many people are in your family? EE's lay fairly well so you may not need too many of them.

Hi there, Welcome to BYC.

Kevin mentioned Easter Eggers (EE).

Easter Eggers are the hatchery version of Ameraucana's, but Easter Eggers lay green eggs. Sometimes feedstores label EE's as Ameraucana's (And they turn out laying green eggs), but true Ameraucana's lay blue eggs. Be cautious!

We're glad to have another enthusiastic young member aboard to learn about chickens (And maybe get chickens soon as well!).

Thank you! And actually, im not looking to only get blue eggs, i want light brown, dark brown, chocolate, olive, green, and speckled. And i think i should only get 8 layer so not to be overwhelmed, and only if i do end up getting throught to my parent that chickens are AMAZING.

Be sure to know the chicken laws where you live! I'd start off with 3-5 first. It's much less stressful for first time owners, because the more packed chickens (chicks especially) can rumble up disease. I've been very successful with batches of 3 or 4. Though I got 12 once and it didn't go quite well. When they learned to roost, the roosted on each other!

Good luck!

Yeah i checked, and i guess nobody ever dared to try out chickens in my town, because all the metionioned in the zoning laws are that you cant let any sort of fowl loose on the street, so that only means i need a run so that they dont go all over town.
