Newbie on starting my run & coop,

Our area for them is around 12X18. We pretty much have the plans of how the run is going to be built, but I concerned about the ground. We raked leaves up for this area, now we have some nothing but dirt ground. I'm getting silkies so I'm concerned about their feathers getting very dirty. I have read a few place of putting grass clippings down for them. We cut grass 1 a week, so that sounds fine to me, but will that be sanitary enough for them? My husband said to use hay or straw, but I read that it can get pretty stinky after a few rains.

Sand may be your best solution. Many people use it successfully.
