I love it here! I'm so glad I found this site. I have learned so much in a short time. Everyone is so helpful and kind. I am glad I'm not the only one who is EGGcited of chickens. LOL I just put 10 more RIR eggs in bator and have 12 more JG eggs coming. I have a staggerd hatch in now, lockdown is FEB 9,11,16 and now the 22. Plus more later.

Hi thanks all for your words of welcome!

I'm proud to report that my first hatch was successful for five of the six eggs. It looks like the 6th one made it quite far before her exit. I opened up the last egg myself on day 23 to see what had happened and found a half-sized chick which had developed quite well - beak and claws and everything - but the chick was dead. It looked like the egg may have been a double yoker although there was only one embryo. Is it possible that I'm correct on this or am I dreaming? (I did just read a long thread about a twin hatch!)

Anyway, here's a pic of one of the wee fellas with his booties. I'm trying to straighten his poor wee claw which seems to be folding over when he walks (any ideas?). More pics are on my blog at http://backyardnz.blogspot.com. I also made a video for my 2 year old nephew who is making his aunt play it over and over again for him. He loves his "dickens"!
