Newbie-pls suggest easy going breed for kids in Florida

I vote for a white Jersey Giant. I have one out of my flock of 10 and she follows me around like a puppy and "talks" to my daughter when she picks her up. Very sweet bird.

Welcome to BYC. I am a little west of you. We have several breeds and we a new to chickens also but my kids are showing them in 4-H at the fairs and we are working on showing at APA shows. Bantams are the best size to start with and to use as showmanship birds for kids. We have Japanese, cochin and a minocra that my boys use. any bree can be tamed if you get them young enough and handle them daily.

My 7 year old is working with sumatras and black jersey giants. But his best egg layers is the austrolorps and Delwares they are pretty docile also.
Roosters are easy to work with. hens get broody and dont want touch at times.
All their showmanship birds are roosters. Check out my personal page I got some of my roos on there

I'm from a different climate but would still vote Buff Orpington. We are new to chickens and ducks and find them to be the easiest and prettiest we have. They fit your description well except for being large....but they take confinement very well. Mine sleep cuddled together so closely I can't imagine that a smaller chicken would take up much less space sleeping!

I say Buff Orpington because they let us handle them more than any of our other birds. And they consistently lay nice large pinkish brown eggs and occasionally go broody.

I have both buff orps and a jersey giant. Both breeds are like feathered puppies. They follow me around ,come running when I call and seem to really enjoy being petted and scratched. They all love string cheese and will beg for it. My birds are backyard birds and I only have 4 so they are more pets than livestock
