Hmmm I've never really had issues with chickens and mulch, though they go into it. But then at least they're just mostly looking for something UNDER the mulch and not confined into that area with the air. So I can't really answer personally and accurately on that one.
On the nostrils, it's possible that without that protective sort of lip, m ore dust and particulates could be getting in. In particularly dusty times (or when I showed) I would use VetRx on nares to help with those issues. I just found it useful and effective. It doesn't "prevent" illness in my eyes, but it's a nice little barnyard device to help aid against excess irritation if the actual environment is healthy.
