Or you think the quail ‘outside’ the brooder are just reflections in the plastic because you’ve been fooled before only to realize they are escapees and it is time to put on the lid! They are fun little buggers!

I once moved 6 young quail out to my growout cages in the garage. The next morning, I discovered that they were small enough to get out of the cage by going out the opening for eggs to roll out. I was able to catch them all and they were none the worse, but I had to block that opening for another week or so.

My King (Button) quail are very adept at hiding. After hours of looking, I finally give up, place little dishes of water/food, and “move on”. A few days later, a tiny object is spotted darting around the floor. These beautiful little birds make me crazy! Last week, I found the latest escapee chilling inside a shoe. That one could’ve turned out bad.

They start getting their wing feathers as early as three days old. It doesn't take long at all for them to start flying.

My coturnix quail... from when they first hatched, until about two weeks, I had them in a clear bin in my room next to my bed.
One of them had hatched three days before the others and had been lonely, so I had held it (his name is Otis, didn't know he was a male at the time) while I waited for the others to hatch. Otis imprinted on me, and somehow sneakily learned to fly without me noticing.
I got woken up one morning by something small, loud, and feathery on my face. Bird poop all over my bed and carpet as well, good times...

There’s a reason I call them “popcorns” haha. Even before they have whole wings, they jump a foot or two when excited or spooked; several times I found a loose chick huddled in a slipper! I will say, they’re quite soft…and known for staying completely silent! I mostly know Coturnix, but are all quail like that?
