Hi I don't have any poultry yet but I would like to start with quail and pigeons. This post will be about quail though. What are the start up costs for quail and what is their ideal housing and what should I feed them? I live in KwaZulu Natal in South Africa what quail would be best for me? Thanks in advance.

What is your goal in having quail? Are they for eggs and meat or just for fun? Another reason? Will they be inside or outside? How much room do you have? If it were me I'd look to see what kinds of quail you can get and go from there. The internet has many sites about quail that have a great deal of information.

Both meat and eggs. Outside in a run/ark/tractor and inside at night. Just over one acre. I'll try and do some research into what I can get locally. Thanks for the advice.

Feed them something with high protein (around 25%). If your keeping for meat AND eggs I've heard that the jumbo coturnix are the largest breed and lay the largest eggs. The rule of thumb is to keep them in a 1 foot square floor space for each quail. Some people keep them on ground while overs keep them in mesh cages so the waste drops to the bottom and the cage stays cleaner for a longer period of time. If waste piles up you must clean the cage because quail poo is high in ammonia and can lead to problems if just left there. Keep males separated, they will fight to the death if together.
