Newbie question about hens

Good luck with whatever your choose. I love my variety of chickens. They all are so diffrent. It is fun and I hope you enjoy it.

Check out this forum for any other questions you have. The people here have been very helpful to me as I encountered problems as a newbie.

Welcome! I'm also in FL.

I bought a cpl of mnth old chicks @ a local flea market and also ordered some day olds from MPC I can really tell a dif between the older (and apparently less socialized) chicks and my day olds. When the flea market chicks see us they run the other way but my day olds that i bought see us and they come running. If u want them as pets as well as for eggs the younger the better I think.

I've got 3 standards I raised from day-old chicks and a cochin banty that I got off craigslist when she was about 2 months old. The friendliest chickens are the ones I raised from chicks, though the RIR is very stand-offish. The cochin tolerates being picked up once you can catch her. She's starting to figure out my tricks for catching her, so I have to corner her.

If you want chickens that sit on you, jump on your back when you bend over, run to see you, and steal your food, then raise your own chicks. If you want chickens that give you space and leave you alone for the most part, get older birds.
