Newbie Question - Nest Boxes and Sand/PDZ

Hello -

My wife has convinced me that we need to get with it and raise our own urban chickens, so I am looking at plans on this (great) site for building a coop.

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, but: if we plan on using sand and Sweet PDZ in the coop (the run will be grass), what should we put in the nest boxes? And will whatever that is (straw, pine shavings, etc), be a problem with the sand?

Welcome to BYC! Some of whatever you use in the nest boxes will end up in the sand but not a big deal. You can scoop it out or simply leave it where it lies, it won't hurt a thing. Oh, Your run will NOT be grass for long.
