newbie question on paper towels in brooder

I use 2x3 or 3x3 foot cardboard boxes that a local business tosses out. I don’t fool with paper towels. At the point I’m satisfied all is going well, I will add whatever mixture of dry hey, pine straw, leaves etc just too help with footing and give them something to to.

I bed the brooder with pine shavings, the 'fines', and then have paper towels on top for a couple of days, with feed scattered there, and a trail of feed heading to their feeder.
When everyone is doing well, the paper towels come out, and they do fine on the shavings.
