Hi! We are getting started with chickens and very excited! We just moved to East Tennessee where we are building our forever home On 50 acre. In the meantime we have decided to get started with eggs. Six barred rocks will be arriving after Valentine’s Day. We have about half an acre now that is only fenced on one side. We do plan to put some privacy plantings up at some point.
I suspect our main predator will be hawks. Many neighborhood dogs bark throughout the night, but have never seen any roaming free. Obviously, I want them to be safe, and am leery about a roofless run. The Premier One electric fence kit seems affordable and could be effective. Is there any way to add a mesh/net cover?
anyhow, what would be the best run to add to our coop? What would be the easiest? We decided to place the coop on the east side of the house, hoping it might get some afternoon shade in the summers. You can see some of our concrete for a hot tub in progress. Is this a bad idea to be so close to the hot tub? I think prevailing winds are mainly from the west and south. The opposite corner of our property is likely dryer, but also less level. I was worried dust and smell would waft into our backyard grill/dining area, which is beside the hot tub area.
sorry for the novel, I wanted to give some context. Thanks in advance for any help!
ps, my husband is gaping at my spend and he doesn’t like (haha! I need keep softening him up!) the idea of digging too much or setting fence posts...how much do people usually spend (we do not have a yardfull of spare parts) on a run (I’m thinking 12x16’ish)?
