Newbie Set Some Eggs the 28th - Anyone care to join me?

Out of my first hatch, I only successfully hatched 10 out of 27 placed in incubator. I was pretty happy with that though...I got nervous closer to hatch date reading on here about some of the problems with chicks hatching or trying to hatch. But I didnt have to help chicks hatch in the end....though 3 didn't that had formed but they were dead.

Yeah, I'm a paranoid mother about the hatch. Congrats on yours. I would like two to hatch, just so the little chicks are used to being with others. But I would be happy with one.

I'll accidentally join you! One of our banties who is usually free range during the day but comes back at night disappeared last Saturday evening(28th). After many tears over fears of predators, she suddenly showed up in the backyard Sunday morning. We put her back in, then I stupidly let her go range again Tuesday afternoon, because she REALLY wanted out(duh, in retrospect), thinking she just didn't make it back to the coop Sat evening before it got too dark to roam & stuck it out in a tree. Guess who didn't come back AGAIN?

Hah! I'm on to you now, chickie mama! The kids found the nest Thursday morning in DD7's Lil Tykes playhouse, under a chair. 9 eggs, all her own, so she'd been planning this awhile, the little stinker!

I'm probably not going to candle them because she's already had a brood that was 100% hatched; I'll leave it to the "expert".

Momma's rockin' along despite the heat. All 9 eggs looking good. The playhouse is under a tree, so nice and shady and she has her own waterer.

We figured out how to secure her from predators! We have a tractor that, once we lift up the playhouse and move it out of the way, we can set right in its place. Her nest is under a play chair, so she won't be disturbed at all, but will be fully protected. Whew!

Momma is mostly Old English Lemon bantam, and Daddy is a full blood full size Ameraucana(my avatar). Her daughter we already have is a little larger than mom but same shady of dark gray, and pretty gray beard and short Am fanny. I just hope the eggs are fertile. I may have to break down and candle them, but she knew what she was doing last time.

Glad you found your little hen and her little bundle of surprise eggs.

It's now going into week 2 for my eggs...daughter had added 10 sussex eggs that'll hatch 4/5 days later than the others. Also, my sweet girl cracked one of MY eggs, a gold laced wyandotte, while candling...5 of those left. Those were my chosen eggs, as they are a favorite breed of mine, along with cochins, brahmas, and orpingtons. Oh, the RIR's we have have personalities I really like. Well, the egg had to be thrown away. One other Wyandotte egg doesn't look good, but 4 are developing nicely. The cracked was a good one as well. Probably the prettiest little pullet of the lot was in that egg lol!
