Newbie SW FL

I've been looking through their catalog and it did look great but I wasn't sure about the legitimacy. Thanks so much Michael! I know my kids each want a silkie bantam...I on the other hand is interested in a good laying bird...(is that even what's it's called?!?). I'm thinking a mixed flock of about 6 to start with...

Glad you joined us. Good luck on your new adventure.

I'm in Georgia and dealing with heat and high humidity is a concern here as well, although I think yours is a bit worse.

The breed info is full of cold tolerant info and very little on heat tolerance. I would suggest trying to locate folks in your area and see what breeds do well there. Build your coop with lots of ventilation and shade for summers. We added a coolaroo shade to block the morning sun and an outdoor weather proof fan to help. Cold melon, frozen treats, pans with ice and green treats were our salvation last summer.

Feel free to ask questions and enjoy your new project.

Sunflour, what about a wall AC unit? Just for those unbearably hot days? I bet I could get one on Craigslist for a reasonable price...also, I'm thinking that covering the coop in vines would help cool it off some...

Murray McMurray is definitely a legitimate hatchery; one of the oldest and largest in the nation. I've ordered from them on a number of occasions and have been happy with their birds and service. But whether or not you order from them, their "chick selector" is still a useful tool for determining the best breeds for you. I used to raise Black Silkies and they are adorable little birds; sweet, gentle, friendly, and funny. My children loved them and made lap pets of them. For sheer egg production, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Whatever breeds or hybrids you end up getting, good luck with your flock.
