newbie thinking of chickens in Alaska

Im in North Pole, & I've got a friend with about two dozen birds who did really well this past winter. They have a thickly insulated coop that always stays above freezing. Chickens are more tolerant of cold than really hot temps I've found. I picked up four chicks 3 weeks ago (Americanas & Buff Brahmas) and then just got four more (Langshans & Light Brahmas) this weekend. Will be building a coop as soon as it gets a little warms out. I'm active duty Army & have come across quite a few chicken owners that I work with and they all say with proper housing it's no more trouble than a dog or cat. I'd be happy to discuss it with you since we are from the same area which is unlike any other. We can share ideas!

What kind of insulation do you use? And fencing for bears and a BIG Malamute?

I have a huge malamute also (we're in North Pole)... He's broken two cables so far this winter. Although he is terrified of the baby chicks. I'm doing 10" thick walls on my coop (same as my house) and thinking a foam & fiberglass combo for insulation. Going to do a big more research & asking around before I commit.
