Newbie to chickens

Thoughts on "indoor chickens"
Everyone has their own opinions on an issue like this and their will be plenty of BYV members who will disagree with me, but my indoor pets are limited to fish (which can be confined in aquariums), small animals which can be easily kept in small, confined areas, and cleaned up after with out too much hassle and odors (examples: small birds, reptiles, hampsters, gerbils, etc.), and cats (which are self maintenancing). For me personally, all other animals including poultry (even bantams), dogs (even small ones), and other forms of livestock (even pot-bellied pigs and pygmy goats) belong outside of my house.

There, we definitely disagree. My dogs..big..are indoor dogs, as are my cats, geckos and 10 parrots. Always been that way, always will be...for me

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, how nice of you to rescue parrots!! I used to keep several Cockatiels and Lovebirds and I know how important it is to give these birds good forever homes. They are not really understood and unless you are a bird person, parrots are not given the proper home. Very sad. So it is you to the rescue!! Keep up the fantastic work!!

Enjoy this new adventure of chickens you are on and welcome to our flock!

That's the beauty of people. We all come in different flavors. If we were all the same I think the world would be a pretty boring place. :o)

I adore my parrots, even though they are destructive, messy, noisy and need a LOT of attention, which they get! They are my children. They argue with me, sing and dance with me and give the best company you could have. Unfortunately, because people don't know what they are getting in to when getting a parrot, they end up getting neglected or fed a bad diet and have health issues you can't fix.

Last September, I lost my favorite Umbrella cockatoo, my best friend. She was dead in her cage and I am still devastated at the loss. She was always sleeping under my shirt and just wanted to be with me all the time and I've had a huge hole since I lost her. Vet says her heart gave out from her past homes. She was only 20 and should have been with me the rest of my life.

Then, I lost my African Grey at 10 years old in January. I syringe fed him every hour for 15 months. Vets says he lived 10 times longer than they ever thought he would. I gave up my social life to care for him. When he was healthy, he was so funny. He lived with a smoker who sat next to him and chain smoked and let him play with the lighter. Vet though he had a tumor, but necropsy showed he had acid reflux and although we had him on an antacid, it didn't help. I'm glad for the time I had with him, as he and I really bonded during his illness, so I am grateful to have been able to scratch his head, as he would never let me before.

I have cockatoos, amazons, cockatiels, and a starling who says everything the other parrots do.

I found chickens are very similar to parrots, although completely different. I'm having fun watching them in the yard. Birds are birds and I love them!

Sorry about the loss of your cockatoo and African Gray. I've never had any cockatoos or parrots, but I've had other kinds of birds besides just farmyard poultry (several different kind of doves, pigeons, finches, parakeets, cockatiels, mynahs, and bulbuls), and it's always sad to lose one of them. They bring us a lot of joy.
