Newbie to the chicken world

Welcome. Are you aware you have a male? Nevermind, I see you are aware.
Yes and we have a local farm that does Rooster round ups and we might have to turn him over to that and that will be sad but I dont think we are ready for a Roo and what happens. We didn’t want to be worried about chicks in our first few years. That was a plan for the future (maybe).

Right now we are unsure what we want to do about the Roo so he stays with the rest of the girls. He doesn’t pick or fight with anyone and if anything he is the smallest of them all. He seemed to be a week behind the girls. It was like he was just hatched and the others were a week older.

We are watching to see what happens and we talked with the neighbors to make sure if it turned out to be a Roo if they would have complaints about it. So far no one has had issues since another neighbor in the past had a Roo. They dont have any chickens at all anymore - they are older and health issues so their flock is done they say.

Hello, welcome to BYC.
As long as you gather the eggs, and you, or a hen, don't incubate them, you want have to worry about chicks.
I hope your male turns out to be a good rooster. Good luck!
We plan on collecting the eggs every day as we go through about 5 dozen from a local farmer in about 3 weeks. We have two dogs that get eggs as a supplement for the extra protein. Plus we enjoy having fresh eggs as well.

We both have stomach issues and have found that local farm eggs compared to the store bought are better for both of us. Also why we are considering meat birds as well next year. Organic foods have gotten way out of control price wise. We have talked about expanding ourselves into a bigger property in the future if all this goes well.

Our dogs are good about watching out of night predators so that has been an awesome finding about our little adventure this year. Jaxson (picture one) and his momma Lola (picture two) alerts us if they hear or smell something around the place. I am very proud of these two watching out for the chickens in addition to protecting us.

Welcome to BYC.
If your concern about keeping your rooster is chicks, you've got nothing to worry about as long as you're a responsible egg collector. Eggs only start developing when kept at over 95 degrees (F) for long periods of time, so as long as you don't leave them in the oven or let your hens sit you'll be fine.
