Hello my name is Jason

Have 2 Chickens I bought for my kids. Haha we all know how that goes, they are mine now lol. Anyway looking to build a tractor/coop for my grass area. Anyway good to be here and I am sure I will be posting questions and maybe pics of my build.

Jason

Jason, welcome from another BYC newbie.

I haven't introduced myself yet. Here goes:
N Central MT, lots of space, the predators are mostly airborne but there are coyotes. 2 dogs and a cat were here before the chickens (2 Ameracauna, 4 Buffs, a Banty. They were raised together and at 12 weeks seem bonded, no issues beyond occasional posturing.
We built a mobile run using irrigation pipe, 2x4s and wire. It has doors at each short end and docks to the roost/coop which is also mobile. Tricks: use pneumatic tires, make people sized doors and forget chicken wire, use hardware cloth or 2 layers of galvanized wire, offset.
Our hoop run was built for 4 chickens (this was before the chicks came home). It is 4x10" but with 6' clearance the chickens can use the vertical space. When the two units are docked together they have plenty of room. Just in the last few days they've had the option of scratching about the yard, chasing grasshoppers or whatever. They stay out 1/2 hour and head back to the run. We are still fine tuning but I'm pleased with ow it all works so far and the girls seem content.
One thing we did right at the beginning was convincing the herding pup that these were HER chickens. She's protective.

Awesome stuff. I didn't mention that I also have a watch dog over my chicks lol. He is a Pitt/Lab mix and has been with them since chicks. He is a great dog and I leave him outside while I let them free range during the day. I don't leave them out too long. The neighbor also has chickens and says there are Air predators around to keep an eye out.

Welcome All!
We are glad you decided to join our flock.
This video should help you learn your way around this site better.
Get settled in then share some pics of your birds!

Great on the watch dog! Family in CO Springs suburbs have a lab to guard their backyard chickens. It works for them.
We hope that the presence of our dogs gives non-domestic predators pause. (fortunately there are no neighbor dogs or cats to worry about. The deer and Elk don't care about chickens.)
Two dogs here: 7 y.o. Aussie/Flat Coat mix. Has retrieved live pheasants in the past (not a gun dog, just birdie<G>).
He is only mildly interested in the chicks.
Younger dog: A fabulous mouser, she catches more than the cat does, carries them around not knowing what else to do. She's a Catahoula - very prey driven and super herding dogs. She is the dog I was worried about. We started her well I think. From day 2 she has been great about the chicks: herds the cat away etc. Both dogs are good when the chicks are out but the younger dog gets anxious if the group separates.... she wants her herds, of any species, to stay together.
The cat will probably leave the larger chickens alone but thinks the Banty looks good. Fortunately that pullet is a super flyer.
Apart from our domestic critters there are hawks, eagles, coyotes and a badger to worry about. Luckily we are far enough from water that skunks and raccoons are not a potential issue.

Cool! Keep in mind that over time your grass will slowly begin to deteriorate... It will be slower since you only have two, but trust me they will get to it! I hope you enjoy having chickens as much as we do :)

Welcome Jason. My three (3 months old) pullets are in a tractor/coop setup as well. I started with a Tractor Supply coop and heavily modified it. It is working pretty well, but if I had to do it over again, I'd build my own A-frame. You can check out the coops section for plenty of ideas.

I move my tractor every two days and the chickens are improving the grass, not killing it.

one of the reasons we built a mobile run was to add nutrients to the ground while keeping any area from being denuded. So far it's working.
