Newbie w/Heat Lamp Questions...

Quote:
I donʻt know what you did wrong, but almost every feed store hangs a portable fixture with a 250 watt bulb on a water trough for their chicks. But again, as I said earlier, get a thermometer and do a couple of dry run tests at different times of day and at night too. My brooder is 48" x 48" by 24" deep and a 250 watt bulb heats it to 94 - 97 degrees if placed right on the wire top for the first week.

I just roasted/killed my day old 4 in a small box with a 75 watt bulb. I bought a 250 red and melted a plastic storage box a month ago. Bigger box, make sure they have a place to get away and cool off.

I bought a 250 watt red lamp for six chiks, good thing I set my brooder up early my temp was about 130degrees wnt to petsmart bought a 150 watt red reptile heat bulb tmp is perfect about a foot high

What about those yellow lights? Anyone try that? (the ones you put outside to discourage near your door to discourage bugs) Would those work the same way as the red to discourage pecking??? I have 4 chicks right now as well and am afraid of pecking after reading some of this stuff.

A 250 watt red bulb may be too much for me (I am using a cut down fridge box) I have it suspended quite high to achieve 90 degrees just below it.
