Newbie w/roosting problem

We have 7 layers, just started getting eggs, got 3 yesterday, :)
This is my first time raising chickens! They're so much fun to watch!
I have a roost question? How big should the bars be? I'm trying three limbs now and don't think I got right size. Its all wrong for them.
How wide should they be? 2",2 1/2"?

Hello and welcome to BYC. I’m sure that others will be advise, although I have read that peeps in temperate climates often advocate the use of 2*4” so the birds can sit on their feet and keep them warm during winter. I have used tree branches, cut wood etc of differing widths and my flock never seemed to show an obvious preference

More generally, this is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/website-announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3/?prefix_id=3

Hi, and welcome!
I use cedar branches. My husband also designed this cradel system so i can just lift the roosts out and have an open space to easily clean the cement pad we put under the roost area.
I have heard that cedar is a natural bug repelent as far as mites and ticks go.
I love this set up.
Glad you joined us!
Welcome to the backyard!

:frow Welcome from New Orleans, This is very similar to what we use, however we rarely have to worry about real cold. Sometimes, in Jan. it's cold and rainy here, but rarely gets to or below freezing, try different things you have around the house and see what your birds like the best. Just remember they will rather be on the highest bar, or at least mine do. Good luck and please continue to jump into the threads, it can be a lot of fun and very funny, when you are down in the dumps. Silly jokes and lots of laughing. :celebrate
