Newbie w/ The Turkeys

Okay we are getting a tom turkey on wednesday, i dont know much about him except he is white and his name is fred, does he need special feed, how should i build him a sleeping box, should i put him with my chickens or let him run our pasture with the other animals i have??? please overload me with lots of Information also you can pm me if you would rather do that!!!!!!! Please all info welcome!!!

He will be our pet!so is the diet diffrent from a turkey you would eat??

Since this turkey was not raised with you, you need to absolutely "Home" him. That is keep him confined to a pen until he considers you part of his flock, and where he it as his him.

If you don't there is a good chance he will take off on you.

This can take from a couple of weeks to a couple of months or longer.

If you have wild turkey's near by, there is always a good possibility that he take off with those no matter what you do, since he is just one, and Turkey's are flock animals. So he needs time to except the chickens and you as his new flock.

You should also be aware that when mating time comes and he has no females he may want to go finds some.

As far as food, always have some bagged wild game feed for him, even though he will free range.

PDPatch- Thanks George is 8 yrs old and he is living with ou farm animals and seems to be doing okay we put him in the stall at night and he gets to come out only when we are outside so far so good
