Arizona desert
Am just starting The Adventure ! Twas something I always wanted but situation was askew...but not NOW! :) !
In low (HOT!) Arizona desert, thinking of planting fig trees to shade coop in summer (drops leaves in cooler late fall-winter- early spring for sun warmth). will need artificial shade until trees mature tho. Sorry, cant offer any advice now for others cuz am at bottom of my learning curve...but having great fun learning! ....and mistakes havent been potentially foolish or dangerous yet.

Question: Suggestions? how do you deal with bully hens? ...beyond acceptance, rehoming, or kitchen pot?
i read on internet that someone uses a cat carrier as "jail" -- but do they learn to,be reintroduced to flock ? Do they make that connection with cause of incarceration? High rate of recidivism? Hey, Im serious! ;-)

I have a few bully hens, as long as no one is seriously hurt (bleeding), I just let them get on with it. If I got one that was really bad I would buy some anti-peck spray for the bird she is bullying and put Vaseline on the birds comb so she struggles to get grip of it. If it still carried on I would separate her for a week and then put her back with the flock.

! Pleased you joined us! I think what you do all depends on how mean she is being. If she is injuring others or preventing them from eating, I'd try isolating her - what do you have to lose? If it's just an occasional peck, that might just be pecking order behavior. Good look to you!

The perp wouldn't understand that they were put in time out (jail) for crimes committed. The idea is removing for a few days and then letting it go back to the flock(on probation)

is that the pecking order probably changed during the time out and the bully will come in low in the ranks.

Thank you all for your tips to deal with Bully Hen.
Very troublesome. Are there notably passive breeds be less inclined to peck others?
Breeds bred for HOT summers, as well? (I dont enjoy the tension in the coop.)
