Hello! We are new to raising chickens and haven't really started just doing the pre-research. Does anyone have any recommendations for first timers when it comes to a brooder? It might need to be outside or something because we have cats inside and one is very curious. I saw some good ones to build BUT since we are at the beginning and not sure if we will do this forever yet, what is a good one to start with? Thanks much for all responses!!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

You can use just about anything, depending on how many birds it needs to fit. For just a few chicks I have used an old aquarium, for lots of chicks I have a stock tank. A friend of mine swears by Rubbermaid totes. We both keep ours in either the garage or barn where they are safe from predators and/or drafts. It needs to be large enough to hold the chicks, feed and water, and an area that they can get out from under the lamp if they are too warm.

I picked up a wooden box from a dumpster at the local tool store. Then made two lids with chicken wire and stole my dogs kennel to put on top and house the heat lamp. Kept the pets out and the chickens in. Borrowed bedding from the guenea pigs, and worked great. Keep it simple
