Hi. I'm new to here but not exactly new to chickens. I currently live in Ontario Canada an about a acre of property. My husband and I started raising chickens seasonally about 6 years ago and we started keeping them year round 2 years later. On our small little property we have also had the occasional turkey duck and pig. We also dabbled with meat rabbits for a bit before we really got into chickens but found the chickens were much more fun.
I now raise only heritage birds. Mostly ones that are cold hardy. I am currently thinning down my flock from 60 to 32 as i think thats a good comfortible number for winter in my coop. I enjoy collecting a rainbow of eggs and looking out into my backyard to see a rainbow of beautifal silly birds.
I will take every opportunity to talk birds with anyone who will join me and I could research for hours on a new feed or some obscure health issue in poultry.
I currently sprout barley for a daily ration and also free feed my own recipe of oats, lentils and peas. And of course healthy kitchen n garden scraps. I try to free range as much as possible when I'm home and outside I've learned the hard way my areas predator population is way to high to let the be free constantly. So they have a huge predator proof run.
I look forward to continuing to brows the site as I have for close to 10 years now and to maybe occasionally ask a question and chat.
