Thank you for adding me. New to raising chickens and am absolutely loving it! I have a mixed group of girls and will be adding some cream legbars to the flock. They are only 3 weeks old now. They are still in my basement and on paper towels in their brooder ( plastic tote container). Would fresh cedar chips be okay to put in with them for the litter? Thanks for the help ahead of time!

Hi Newby! Welcome to Backyard chickens. Pleased to meet you. I can't see a reason why cedar chips would hurt them as long as you keep them fresh. Cedar does put off a scent though, so I would think with a little bit of excrement might be a catalyst with the natural chemical in the wood. So it is best to keep the bedding clean as possible I would imagine.
We keep cedar chips rolled up inside of old tube socks in our dresser drawers. It makes everything smell so good. I wish I had a Cedar Chest at the foot of the bed like my grandmother did. That is something you don't see these days anymore as much. Once again welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Welcome to BYC!!! So glad to have you.

Don’t use cedar for birds, it can cause respiratory issues and I believe bumblefoot. For my brooder I like to use pine shaving. You can also just you paper towels, sand, blankets, etc.

Welcome to BYC. I would recommend pine shavings rather than cedar shavings.

Some Cedar is bad for chickens so it is safer to use pine shavings.

X2 what @sourland and @N F C said, also hardwood shavings, like aspen shavings are compatible with chicks of all kinds. It's what I use and has an earthy smell instead of pine.
