Howdy :frow and Welcome to Backyard Chickens.

Even when they have all grown up, you will still have to worry about hawks and other predators getting them, especially if you intend to "free range".

Thanks for joining our community! :celebrate
I'm certain you're right. No illusions here. We have hawks, coyotes, bear, raccoons, possums and fox in these parts. Oh, and weasels. Can't forget those little buggers. Many near us free range their chickens successfully. We have a plan on when to let them out and when to put them "to bed". No guarantees that they will always be safe, but we'll do our best for them. We've predator proofed the chicken house as well as anyone could, so we're hoping for the best. Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks! Well aware of the fire hazards. The heat lamp is securely hanging from chain which is run THROUGH both sides of the clamp. Both ends of the chain are looped through the eye on a hook. The hook is sunk about an inch into solid oak. Can't get any more secure than it is, but still very aware that poop occurs, so I'm checking often! Thanks again!
So glad to hear this.

So glad to hear this.
When I went up to check on them for the final time this evening, it was still cozy in the chicken house even though I had turned the heat lamp completely off a few hours prior. SO, I decided to swap out the heat lamp for the 100 watt bulb I had been having to use in their spot here in our house. The heat lamp was WAY too much for them where we had to keep them in here. Should be safer, too. :)
