Hi.

I am new to chickens. Actually I was terrified of them following a vicious cockerel of my nans as a young girl.

But I wanted to share my Dad's hobby. I would collect the eggs but only I was able to vault the fence and shut the chickens out first.

Now... 2 years on... I will hold one after I build myself up to it. I will hold the chicks and I will stroke the tame chicken.

As a farmer I know this phobia is silly. I am also terrified of mice and rats after a rat came out a feed bag I put my hand in and ran up my arm and bit me as I tried to get it off my neck!

I have 250 sheep, 4 sheepdogs, a parrot and two beautiful horses. We run a high welfare farm and caravan/camping site in Essex.

I recently did my first hatch and I am reading all the hints and tips on here.

We breed Legbars, French Copper Marans and Wheatan Marans.

I used RopaB liquid in water for natural parasite control and good immunity as well as Fliteboost from ropastore fpr respiratory issues. These proved to be worth their weight in gold.

I have enrichment toys in the runs to keep hens happy and stop bullying.

I still don't want to go near the cockerels

Hi there!

I too was scared of birds at first and chickens were never my idea! My sin and his dad started with them but once I realised I wasn’t going to be attacked by beaks or claws I was smitten! I’ve never looked back since and they are a fab hobby.

Enjoy your time here :frow

I would have been as terrified by your experiences with rooster & rat, as you were.
Hopefully nothing like that will happen again. It's great that you are incubating eggs, baby chicks aren't intimidating. Welcome to the BYC community.
