Hello chicken friends! I'm restarting my flock after total predator loss. I've moved through hard sad feelings and onto reclaiming the coop as my place of happiness.

I have done so much work making it better out there:
1. Installed a Pullet Shut auto door, with solar power and so far it is awesome and I did it myself including cutting a hole into my coop which I was dreading.
***this is my main upgrade. My coop is a fortress unless I forget to lock up, which happened twice recently. I am the reason the fox or raccoons got in 😫
2. Pulled my Grandpa's feeder back out and adjusted it to work with my smallest new hen, a serama.
3. Figured out why my waterer always had a slow leak, thoroughly scrubbed it out, and reset. It's a top loading one and I love it again.
4. Plugged tiny gaps with hardware cloth to reduce access to wood rats. See also: using the Grandpa's feeder again
5. Redid the fencing on the run and had a functional gate put in.
6. Hung a 50' net over the run for hawks
7. Put a few pansy flowers outside the run for charm
8. Nabbed bagged leaves from my neighbor's yard work for mulching the run/ chicken enrichment/ reducing mud on booted hens
9. Steadily built a new starter flock of 5 bantams
10. Added a rooster who is attentive, sweet, hilarious, and treats like mad.
11. Ordered the assorted bantams 5 pack from Cackle due to ship Feb 4

Oh and
12. Planning a mural for the coop.

Please join me in crowing about your own upgrades. I learn so much here and am excited to keep going.

Happy holidays!

Your coop and run sounds very charming and like you’ve put a lot of time, effort and planning into everything. I’m so sorry for the loss of your first flock. Heartbreak like that is tough to overcome :hugs Glad you’ve found a way through the sadness and are carrying on, though. There are a lot of chickens who deserve good homes and you sound like you have a great one ready for more! Pictures are always welcome 😉 are you painting the mural yourself? I also have a mural for our run and we love it. It’s a brought, sunny addition. I always joke that the ladies needed something to look at since we can’t have roosters inside city limits (there is a rooster in the mural lol).

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, Duckduck, but glad you're diving back and making some upgrades. I love planting chicken-safe flowers outside the run. When the heads are spent, I pop them in for the girls to play with. The biggest upgrade I made this year was putting in a bench for everyone to sit on. Yes, it's another thing to clean poop off of, but the cuddle time was so worth it.

I can't wait to see your finished mural! What a great idea!

Do you have a photo?? This sounds amazing!

I do! The run has come a long way since this, but this was before fencing was up:

my brother surprised me with it.

My jaw literally dropped. It's so beautiful and fun and happy! And your brother did that himself? Unreal.
Thank you! I will pass on the praise. He is very artistic!

Can’t wait to see plans for your mural @Duckduckgoosie! They really are so fun!
