Welcome to Backyard Chickens!:welcome We are glad you joined the flock! BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost!:highfive: What surprises me is that there was no blood involved. This is usually common when integrating into a flock of hens. Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

That's the problem with the pre-fab coops. They are NEVER large enough to house what they print. Usually a third the number will fit but only if an additional run at a MINIMUM of 10 sq feet per bird is attached.
Take a look on Craigslist for used sheds. Sometimes you can find one cheap. You would then have to find a shed moving company to move it for you. Incorporate that into the cost.
I will be converting my shed into a coop this spring myself. Always plan a larger coop than you think you will need. Chicken math is a real thing! It happened to me and I swore I wouldn't want more than 9 chickens. Ha!
I've been looking for a used coop since June on craigslist. None in Maine worth buying. Pieces of junk half falling down. I've found a place in the west that sells kits for every thing even garages with pretty good prices. Don't know if I can mention the name here. I can get a good sized shed for around $600. I probably can't even buy lumber here for that price. My handy man/carpenter can build it for me.

please check out the coops section first, so a handy man /carpenter knows what should be included and the spacing for roosts, nest boxes, etc.and security ie, hardware cloth backing any windows that can be opened, the need for good ventilation etc.

Thanks... a lot of the work has already been done on these kits. Free shipping and all we have to do is get roofing. Probably metal. I am a planner and spring is a long way away in Maine. LOL

Hi Bobbi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya
Thanks.. Question for you. Do SLW lay freckled eggs. My Buff doesn't nor does my NH Red. It's a smaller egg than my Buff and NHR. I wiegh my eggs so I know which birds are laying. SLW are 17 weeks old but hardy and they have started to eat more. They won't fight back with my Bully NHR.

Sorry Bobbi, I don't know. I've never had that breed.
That's ok. Just curious. I don't know for sure if the SLW are laying or not. But got a small egg two days ago and one this morning. But nothing yet today from Buff or NHR. That's very unusual. Gonna go out and check again now. Still no eggs from my Buff or NHR they are doing a lot of talking so maybe getting ready.
