Hi everyone. I live on the Mississippi Gulf coast and have four chickens. Two Barred Rocks and two Black Australorps . They are about 21 weeks old and free range most everyday in the backyard. One of the Australorps has just recently become aggressive toward me and will come up to me in an aggressive stance about a foot away Like she is saying "don't come any further". If I reach down she will peck me hard enough to hurt. I have now started using leather gloves near her because of this. Any ideas about why this change in behavior?

Hi and welcome to BYC. Assuming that your offending bird is a pullet, I tend to tap their beak with my index finger, or push them away gently, but firmly with a foot. I agree with JJ above that it is unusual for a pulllet to act in such a fashion. As suggested, free to post a pic either here or this forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/what-breed-or-gender-is-this.15/

Use a few dried mealworms or a treat in the hand and begin to socialize the bird to you. Gently pet if she lets you on the back or head. Use soft voice first when approach to not startle. I spend time with mine and they typically do not peck but can when hungry so put food down quickly. They then go after the food.
