Newbie

Hi everyone. I live on the Mississippi Gulf coast and have four chickens. Two Barred Rocks and two Black Australorps . They are about 21 weeks old and free range most everyday in the backyard. One of the Australorps has just recently become aggressive toward me and will come up to me in an aggressive stance about a foot away Like she is saying "don't come any further". If I reach down she will peck me hard enough to hurt. I have now started using leather gloves near her because of this. Any ideas about why this change in behavior?
Hold off feeding for a short while in the morning. Make sure "she's" hungry then offer mealworms from your hand. Do the every day until she see's you as her food source my 2 SLW pullets were very wary of me to begin with now 2 months later I have them eating out of my hand and can pet them etc.

Sorry you're having an issue with your BA. Is she bullying your other birds?
Small comb and wattle compared to the other BA I have. No signs of crowing from any of them. I'm just wondering if she is at the top of the pecking order and she wants me to know it. This evening before putting them to bed she did pretty much the same thing except she would peck my shoes. I thought I would try to get her attention and pushed her out of my way with my foot. She seemed to get more angry when I did that but after several times of doing that to her I think she got the idea. Then I started making her move for me all around the yard. After that she would not come near me. I hope she gets the idea that I am the Head chicken in the pecking order now. I'm curious to see how she behaves tomorrow morning!

I have been hand feeding all of them with meal worms for weeks. She just started this a few days ago. I think I may (crossed my fingers) fixed the problem today by turning the tables on her. When she started pecking my shoes I started pushing her away with a little bit of force. After that she initially seemed to get even more angry but after 5 or 6 times of shoving her away she stopped. Then I chased her all around the yard so that now she won't come near me.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive:
I have experienced aggression in one of my pullets and although they are not as vicious as cockerels, it can still hurt. I had tried the method where you push them down to the ground for a few minutes to show your dominant, but of course that wasn't successful at all. So one day when she decided to take a lunge at me, I kicked her hard back into place and it never happened again.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
