Looking for any helpful hints/tips. Im completely new to raising chickens and ducks. My son(12yrs) has been begging for 3 yrs to get them. Have a house with the land to accommodate them so i agreed. Family of 4, my husband is disabled so i work full time. We have english mastiffs and cats and 1 rabbit. I grew up around my cousins dairy farm but its been awhile! Bought a coop from the store but seems cheap and not big enough. I work with tools so thought i should maybe make my own. Not sure on size but i have 8 chicks and 4 ducks. I want them to have more than enough room! I dont do bare minimum. We are doing this for the fresh eggs.....nothing beats fresh eggs! Again any insite is appreciated!

Welcome to BYC.
:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.
Most store bought coops lie about how many birds they can hold. :(
Can you post a photo of yours and we might be able to help you figure out how to add on to it.

Maybe 6 or 7 bantams but no more than 3 or 4 large chickens. If you can’t return it I suggest to stain and reinforce it, put decent lock on. Check out the coop section, lots of ideas to build coops and runs, convert sheds and playhouses, etc. If you can’t return the prefab you can use it for a bit until they outgrow it, then use it as a isolation coop or infirmary . Before I forget.... Welcome :welcome

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Texas Kiki and fldiver97 have given you good advice and suggestions. I would add , also check out the predator threads to learn how to best safeguard your flock. Everything LOVES to eat chicken. When you have birds, the preds are the first to notice.
