Thanks for all the great tips. Now I have another question and I really feel stupid!! I am leaning towards Brahmas but I don't want any roosters. I have been looking online and located a website that sells Brahma cockerels but the picture of the adult bird looks like a hen. Isn't a cockerel a baby rooster?

You are correct. A male chicken is a cockerel up to one year old.

That's a completely reasonable question
Yes, a male chicken under a year old is a cockerel. A female under a year is a pullet.
