Hi
I've kept chickens before but was working full time and many other commitments meant I didn't have time to enjoy them so didn't replace when they eventually died. Now retired I'm starting again and have forgotten everything I knew. I'm currently just looking for my flock, reading about different breeds etc. and preparing the ground so to speak. My grandchildren will be helping so I am keen to have healthy happy hens that they can handle and help care for. I seem to have a long shopping list of food, grit, Verm X Poultry Shield etc etc. There's a lot of different advice on all this and so I thought coming to this forum would help.

Yes, there is a lot of advice to be given to people who are "new to chickens". It really depends on how much you want to spend on your flock. To me, money is no object when it comes to my flock. I pay what I pay because I know they'll be happy campers. If you're getting chicks, I would suggest crumbles with high protein to start your chicks out strong. As they start to get older and are in their teenage phase, drop the protein, or they will get diarrhea. You can start giving them adult food. This all depends on what kind of birds you get (layers or meat birds); they have slightly different diets. And it also depends on what you want to do with them as well, i.e. sell eggs or sell carcasses.

I know what you mean about forgetting everything you knew. We had chickens the whole time I was growing up, so I spent years around them. But my dad died a few months after I got my own chickens, so I needed knowledgeable help.

Finding BYC -- where I lurked for years -- was great for me, and I think it will be great for you!

Welcome to the group!!
