Hi
I currently live in Nj but will be moving to South Carolina this summer. I have never raised chickens before and I am taking this year to read up and learn everything I can about keeping chickens. I have been browsing the forum for a little while and figured its time to join.

LOL Cindiloohoo.. it fits me well. I want to have chickens but I am so afraid. My husband says if my plants are any indication he feels bad for the chickens.

I have been reading up to make sure I get it right, the coop, the feed, the daily care etc. I have never raised any type of livestock and my husband is a city boy and never even had a dog! I do have pets... 2 dogs, 2 cats, a rat and a hamster. And I do have 4 kids that seem to be just fine lol... once I learn how to care for them I think I will do ok. Its just a fear of the unknown that gets me second guessing myself.

Spend a little time thinking about what you want to get out of the addiction, er...experience - daily fresh eggs, awesome meat, or just entertainment? Some of the breeds are easier than other for beginners. You've definitely come to the right place, this site is loaded with experts who are friendly and willing to help!

I would like the fresh eggs to start. We are moving to a new house and until I get to know the neighbors I would like to keep it as just hens. The house is on 4 acres and all the neighbors have about the same amount of land and we all back to woods. Its legal to keep chickens. I dont want to start off on the wrong foot with the neighbors by having a nuisance of a rooster. My mom had chickens and a rooster but that was after I was married and not living in the same area as her. She had to get rid of her rooster after neighbors complained. I didnt notice any of my new neighbors having a coop set up so the rooster is going to have to wait.

I hear you about the rooster - when we got our Barred Rock hens, they included a rooster by accident. My night owl neighbor horse vet did not appreciate the 5:15 am summer morning wake up call. Unfortunately, even though the rooster ("Harvey") was beautiful, after about 8 months, he had to "take the ride" with a batch of meaties. We offered him up to the neighbor as a tasty peace offering and all is well between us. Good luck!
