So I went out in my back yard back in March. There was a chicken walking around. I had chickens when I was a kid but that was a LONG time ago and I don't remember much except they were white. It was so friendly. Looked young. So, my hubby picked it up and put it in a squirrel trap. It was the only cage we had at the time. We don't much care for squirrels since they went under the hood of the car and chewed up all the wires.

My husband bought a bag of chicken feed the next day at the Tractor Supply Company and the rest is anything but normal.
I was pretty sure it was a rir hen. So I named it Daisy. I asked a friend of mine if she had a rooster she didn't want. She gave me a buff orpington and we named it Jed.
To make a long story longer Jed started laying eggs. Daisy started walking funny and her tail seemed to have very long feathers and it was bent, so I took Daisy to the vet. I had to call 4 vets to find one that would even see a chicken. The vet told me she never saw one before but she would be glad to look at her and see if she could help. She looked her over and said her comb was nice and dark red and she had clear eyes and she seemed a good size and pooped all over the table at least 3 times, but her spine is curved. Since I found her, there is no telling what happened to her. It could have been a deformity that developed inside the egg. She didn't have any marks on the outside like some kind of trauma. She looked at me and said, "You have a "special" chicken." She said as long as it can walk and eat and poop just watch out for other chickens picking on her and she should be ok.
I took Daisy home and her comb seemed to get bigger and bigger and her tail feathers started curling around and she never did lay a egg. So about a week ago I started looking at pictures of rir roosters and that's exactly what I have.
So, Daisy, is a boy and Jed is a girl.
I never knew how much I would love them but everyone in my family loves them, so my husband went on this website and found plans for a chicken tractor. He took plans from this site and added a few touches of his own and It was finally done about 2 weeks ago. Got 10 pullets from Ideal Poultry. They said they would ship on Aug. 29. I am so excited I can hardly wait. 2 black Australorps, 2 Salmon Favorelles, 2 rir, 2 silver grey dorkings, and 2 Americaunas.

This picture is the day after we found him. Looked normal to me until he got bigger.

He is not what you would call a RIR. He is a production red male. He looks like a sweetheart!

Very nice story. Welcome to the addiction! You must be very excited to get your new girls :)

I see the difference in the color. Put right next to that rir the deformity really stands out. His poor spine is soooo crooked.

He should be able to live a normal life. I have a crooked spine (or as you may know it as Scoliosis) and I am happy and healthy. Sometimes my back will ache, but for the most parts it doesn't.

Just don't hatch any chicks from him, so as not to pass on the deformity.

Does he seem normal otherwise?

Welcome from Missouri
Your story of Jed a girl and Daisy a boy made me laugh...So do you still call your roo Daisy?
Also did you notice chicken math is starting with your family.?..One goes to 2 Two goes to 12.....and on and on ChickenMath strikes again.Welcome to our addicted chicken group her and friendly Warning...dont get an incubator! You will go from 11 to 20 like me

Yes. He just walks crooked and looks crooked. I am not planning to hatch any eggs at all. I just like the chickens as pets and we will collect the eggs every day.

I let them out every day (under close supervision) and when it is time to put them up I call "Daisy" and they both come. Is that animal abuse?

Am I going to have to take them to a therapist?

:gig

I call one name and they all come running, so that's most likely the sitaution you are in ;)

My favourite hen is named Penny, and she is a red sex link. I recently added 19 more RSL to the mix, and I named them ALL Penny. Now that is animal abuse
