Well of the 4 buff silky eggs, I have one live chick. I had to help him out of the shell on day 23. He's peeping loudly (for the last 2 hours) and he had a rough day.
In the morning, I peeled away just the pip area and hoped he would free himself without my help. However at 5pm, he had made no progress. So, newbie-me, I read the post about "what to do if you intervene" and used dull tweezers, warm water and a warm wet washcloth for the procedure.
There is a very small amount of blood in the bator, mostly I think from the vein in the membrane. He has a bit of dried membrance on one wing. He cannot stand yet. It has been 2 hours.
BUT -- we have HOPE!

We're not really sure it's a "HE" but we've named him Rocky Balboa because he's definately a fighter.

I have seven eggs still in the hatcher/bator on day 19, and they are all Welsummers.

Well, Rocky didn't make it. After 3 hours of loud cheeping, he gave up. I think this means: Mother Nature knows best.
I don't think I'll help again if the situation arises.

Now I'm worried about the other 7 eggs. Wondering if my preset temps in the 1588 Hovabator are too low (98.5 to 99.2 consistently). It is a forced air bator, not still air.

Hatch Update

Remember me? My post got this whole post started! Well, my hatch is finished, thankfully, and these are the results.

Started with 32 eggs

Day 7 candled and culled 1 egg-it was not fertile

Day 14 candled and culled 7 eggs-not fergile, or very little development, mostly just brown looking yolk, gross, made me have dry heaves

24 eggs left in the bator till hatch time.

12 chicks hatched out beautifull on days 20 & 21, one chick with a huge zip, but no progress. I helped him out finally on day 22, and he has struggled ever since, but he is still alive, and finally fluffing up and hanging with the other 12 instead of looking like an outcast.
On day 23, two more pips making no progress, so I helped them out. This morning, one is alive, one is dead. The alive one looks just like the other one I helped out, scrawny, gangly, ugly, and hopefully he won't get pecked to death by the 12 healthy chicks. So my final count is 14 out of 24. I don't win the prize, but I got 12 cute bantie chicks and this was a really fun experience!! Kristy
