Newbie's Coop

I like this! The red door is very attractive and I like anything with recycled materials. You did a great job.

Very nice design. I converted a large 7' x 3' dog house into a chicken coop using scrap wood from a crate. Certainly not as well constructed or eye catching as yours (Electrician by trade) but its functional. Great job!

The red door is my favorite part! I would worry about something reaching thru that wire to get at the chickens, but then again, I worry about everything!

Hey its nice!! Like the broom idea in the coop .always handy...Good to sweep out the pine shavings too.
LOVE the ppl door .Pretty fancy!

Very nice! LOVE that red door.

A friend gave me a bunch of repurposed wood. I wasn't sure what it would look like slatted up on the wall. It looks great! If I have enough wood, I may not have to buy plywood.

Thanks for posting your design.

Very cute! I'm going to make a guess and say that your birds will roost in the nest boxes (since they are nice and high) and they will nest and lay right under them since it's all covered and low on the floor where they like to lay.

If you don't mind that part-- since you DO have a door under the boxes, it will probably work out pretty well despite that and you'll still be able to get the eggs. I'm not sure what the lath is like, never used it, but twisted wire is usually not as great as welded wire. But just keep an eye on it and it might just work out fine for where you are. Especially if you are in town and don't get a lot of predators. I know it wouldn't work for me, but it sure does seem to work fine for a lot of people. I had a dog tear thru some of my chicken wire last year (no birds were in the enclosure) but I'll never do that again! If they are large and can paw on it, the wire just un-twists and creates BIG gaps. Oops!! What I REALLY love is your red door-- it is FANTASTIC!!! Great job with re-purposing the wood.

I put the hen door right under the nest box with the thought that the traffic would dissuade nesting down there. We shall see!
RiddleMe warned about the nestbox height in relation to the roost bars. Ive got quite a bit of head room in the enclosure so I'll put the roost bars another foot in the air and see if that prevents the problem.

Thank you all much for your kind words and advice!
