Hello,

First timer here, and first time raising chickens. We moved to this area about 11 months ago, and bought our chicks from Orschelns in March (2018).

We bought 12 to start us off. Unfortunately one never made it out, but it was not due to illness. I was cleaning the pen one day when my daughter came in behind me without me seeing her and she grabbed a little one and gave it a “gentle giant” squeeze. Poor baby didn’t make it more than an hour after that. I felt so heartbroken. Still do when I think about it too long.

Anyway... the girls have been outside for quite a while now, and we started free ranging for a couple hours a day for a while, but our poor girls caught the attention of a fox and it got four of them before we even knew what happened!

So recently I’ve introduced another four, plus a rooster to our flock. They’re only on day two of being together without any barriers and they’re all handling it pretty well. I may be meddling a bit too much, because I feel as though I’ve been babysitting them the last two days. The newcomers look to be about a month or so younger than our original flock but they came with a sizable rooster and that seems to have leveled it out for them lol. So far there’s just been some chasing and “light” pecking going on. Nothing major *fingers crossed*.

We have lots of high hopes and plans for our future here and the future of our beautiful hens. Thanks for having me here. I look forward to reading the forums and feeling all the feels with you :)
