We have 5 acres and really don't have a clue how to be country people. We're trying, though! Right now we have 3 hens and a roo. Our girls started laying last week, while we were on vacation. They completely ignored the short nesting box (with ping pong balls) that came with the coop, and headed for the woods. My mom didn't realize it. By the time we got home, they were used to hiding wherever to lay, since they free range. Thankfully we noticed one missing, and found her on a nest of 4 eggs. Today I've kept the girls locked in the coop, and made a more private nesting box. Two have laid in the box so far. Hopefully they'll train easily.
