I have a 3 day old chick that has not been able to walk properly since hatching, it manages to get about by shuffling on its one leg. I noticed its bad leg stuck out to the side more so i taped them together like you would for splayed legs. It's toes are also very curled under. I made boots for it but i found it still did not put its bad leg to the floor and that it was making it much harder for the chick to move about. Does anyone know what is wrong with the chick and why it wont put its foot the ground? The chick has not been dropped or anything and the hatch was not interfered with! The picture shows the chicks right leg to be the worse one that it wont put down.

Another question is how can i encourage a chick to eat who wont open its eyes or mouth?

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated

Well, to me it looks like one of the chicks I had who suffered from splayed leg as well as the toe curl. He also didnt eat, although his eyes were open. After a few days he was obviously a lot smaller than his siblings. I used small pieces of cardboard and band aids to fix his toes and band aid for his legs. He seemed to do a little better after that, but at about a week and a half old he died sudenly. I don't know if I did something wrong or he just was beyond repair. Try fixing his feet by cutting two small peices of thin cardboard (the kind from a cerial box) the size of his feet. Use two band aids to attatch them to the bottoms of his feet. He might have a litte trouble getting used to walking with these on, but he should get better with practice. Good luck!

Hi, I had a chick last year who had one foot curled in a ball. I realised it was a vitamin deficency, but thought it can't be that as he is getting all that in his chick mash. But I went and looked at the bag of food and it was the wrong one! It said on the side of it 'layers mash' when it should have been 'chick mash'
So went and got a bag of chick mash, and it was amazing how quickly his foot came back to normal!
So might be an idea to check it's chick mash ur giving him, so he gets all the right vitamins.
