Hello, all!
Having lived in central Pennsylvania for all of my 68 years, I'm looking to gain additional information and knowledge regarding the hatching and raising of various breeds of chickens and quail. I've hatched a variety of eggs, including chicken, ducks, geese, guineas, pheasant and quail. I now exclusively use the forced-air styrofoam type incubators with fairly good success. Once in a while, when I can find a broody hen, I'll let her do the incubation duties and allow her to raise the peeps. Most all the chicks I hatch and raise I end up giving away. I just enjoy the process of incubation and like having the peeps around.
I presently have ten snowflake quail that I hatched from eggs in Spring 2016. These quail then laid their own eggs last year and I hatched some more and then gave them away. I sold a few eggs, gave most of them away and pickled a few (delicious!). Having seven hens I almost always got seven eggs a day (that's over 200 per month!) and it kept me busy finding somebody who wanted them.
Looking forward to learning much more and hearing the stories from the Back Yard Chicken members.
