The finished result may not look patchy, but roos feather in very patchy colorations when going through the awkward teen stage. Females, on the other hand, feather even uninterrupted patterns the entire time. If the bird in hdowden's previous post was completely an even red, then we would say it's a female. Those random splotches of red here and there are ALL male. He'll finish with nice fully red shoulders, but right now it's a mess.
