We had a brutal winter this year, daytime Temps were in the teens, night time was single digits or colder. My coop isn't very well insulated and I only had 3 chickens in it so I stuck a non light emitting ceramic heater in there with them. Honestly I doubt they needed it, but it helped me sleep at night. During the day when I'd open the coop door all my chicks still came out to the run. They weren't cold at all, it'd be a blizzard outside and my chickens still didn't want to be cooped up (our run is covered). My suggestion is they don't need an outside heat source, if they get cold they'll just roost a little closer to each other.

What you call brutal temperatures are nice winter days around here. I define brutal as -20's with -40 plus wind chills. Your temperatures are a whole 30 degrees warmer. My chickens do fine.
