NewChickMom....chicks quickly out grown their brooder....help please :)

Well I peeked out back door to check on my babies and they were all huddle up tight right under lamp just cackling away, very unhappy. It's pretty windy out making it very chilly out and I see lightening and hear thunder off in the distance. Decided best bring them in for the night.

They are all sprawled out in every odd position imaginable in their brooder sound asleep now. Think I will have to find a bigger brooder for a little while longer until it warms up more.

I just moved my 2 week old chicks to a outside 6 x 8 coop that is pretty draft proof but has high vents. It was 40 today but, didn't feel that warm and will be much colder for the next week. I had put two 250 watt heat bulbs in for them before I moved them but, after a hour they still looked fluffed up, cold and loud. I added a third heat lamp and when I just checked them tonight they look so happy and content! Chicks are out of our house, my DH is so happy!

Well first off, I have been corrected, I said 'heavies', when it should been 'hardy'.

We been letting the chicks and ducks play in and have fun in the coop during the day, but bringing them in at night, we got a bigger brooder made up for them so they have a lot more room now. We still been getting some pretty cold (20-30's) and windy nights and we got some severe storms coming this weekend. So we going to hold off a bit before staying in coop permanently. For one, I have to make sure the coop is going to be okay in it's currently location with no threats of flooding. We may need to move it or raise it, so I don't want the babies in it and it floods. We live in a low spot that tends to flood.

I was thinking maybe they meant "heavies" as in heavy layers. It's all good. lol Glad you found a solution and a little more time to find out if your coop location is good. I will be needing to add more sand to my runs I'm sure when all this snow finally melts : \
