Hi

Just found this site while trying to find some answers.

We're near Cambridge UK and have kept chickens since about October last year. Started with Mr Spikes, Hetty and Martha, 3 partridge Wyandottes, who hatched one buff Silkie earlier this year, and are bringing up two, what were day old, cream legbars!

Unfortunately Socks the Silkie keeled over this morning

, and I don't know why, so I'm hoping someone on here might be able to convince me that the others aren't all going to do the same now!

I still have to tell my 5 year old that his baby chick is no longer with us!

Welcome---so sorry for your loss.

Did your silkie have any symptoms of any kind before he died? He could have had some kind of condition that isn't contagious, or he could have has something very contagious-----don't know w/o details. Glad you found this site, there are a lot of helpful and informative people on here who dearly LOVE chickens!!

She appeared fine. They have all been treated for leg mites for a number of weeks, and when we were doing that last night, I noticed she was a bit smelly (almost like cheesy feet). This morning, she didn't particularly want to come out of the coop, and when she did she just sat, then keeled over dead.....

Droppings a bit runny, but nothing overly strange that I haved picked up on.

She hadn' t been vaccinated for anything, as a first new chick, I hadn't really thought about that if I'm honest, so maybe there's something common which I could have prevented?

She's still got the cheesy feet smell this morning, which is, perhaps rather oddly, head end rather than feet end.
